Here is a list of best free Pink noise generator software for Windows. Audacity is my favorite software because it lets you generate pink noise and lets you save it in various audio formats. Plus, it also lets you mix Pink noise with other music files. As it is mainly an audio editor, so the editing of parameters of Pink noise signal is also easy.

Audacity

Audacity is a free and open source audio editor software for Windows. This popular freeware also has a native feature to generate Pink noise. Along with Pink noise, you can also generate White and Brown noise.

Not just generate, you can also directly add Pink noise to any audio or music file. The Generate tab of Audacity contains an option named Noise. On clicking Noise option, you get three noise types namely, White, Pink, and Brown. Select Pink noise and vary amplitude and duration of Pink noise using given options and press OK to add it to sound editor. Both the amplitude and time duration values can be saved as presets for future use. Before actually adding the Pink noise to the editor, you can also preview it.

The main benefit of using Audacity is its audio editing capability, using which you can use Pink noise to make test sound for microphones or mix Pink noise to create experimental sound. Plus, the generated Pink noise can also be exported as MP3, WAV, FLAC, MP2, AAC, etc.

Audiodope

The Tools menu contains the Noise Generator option, through which you can generate Pink, Brownian, and White noise. As soon as you click on the Noise Generator option, a small window will pop up that will ask you to select the sampling rate and channels (mono or stereo) values. This free version of TrueRTA works on level 1 configuration, means many advanced tools are not present in it. Still, as this free version can generate Pink noise, you don’t need to upgrade to the higher versions.

Room EQ Wizard

Room EQ Wizard is a free acoustics analysis software for measuring and analyzing room and loudspeaker responses. It is mainly used to find out the best location for speakers, subwoofers, etc., and to get the best possible sound experience. All the designs were used only for comparison and not for any commercial purposes.

At the beginning…

Around a week ago I’ve got a strong internal need to synthesize a sea waves sound (we don’t have an ocean in Poland), as I try to design an updated version of my Binaural Beat Generator. Usually, this kind of synthesis starts with pink noise, later shaped with VCF or VCA modulated with sine (or triangle) LFO. The problem was, I had no pink noise generator. It seemed like a fun project, so I started to dig for some schematic. First of all, I’ve chosen 3 of the most popular that looked as they have a chance to work:

  1. MFOS “Pink Enough for Me” noise source
  2. Elliot Sound Products “Pink Noise Generator for Sound Testing” (with basic filter)
  3. Noise source with passive filter, published among others in ” The Noise Generator Cookbook” by Thomas Henry

The circuits were so simple, I’ve decided to build all of them to check the differences in generated sound. I think my more practical article will be a good read along with the one from experimentalistsanonymous , as it covers simulation and theoretical filter characteristics of pink noise generators).

Idea and prototyping

All popular analog pink noise generators share the same topology: white noise source, then -3 dB/oct lowpass filter. “White noise” part is an easy one, the problem lies in the tricky LP filter design. To get flat -3 dB/oct response filters are quite complex and often use uncommon part values (replaced by parallel common capacitor connection).

I’ve breadboarded (from top):

  • pink noise source with passive filter – 24 parts*,
  • Elliot Sound Products “Pink Noise Generator for Sound Testing” – 21 parts*,
  • MFOS “Pink Enough for Me” generator – 23 parts*.

(*) 1 opamp = 1 part, decoupling caps counted in

All schematics say “+/- 12 V supply”, but I used 6F22 battery pair (+/- 9 V) to power the breadboarded generators [I had problems with oscillations/ground loop (?) in MFOS design as I used lab PSU].

The output from each generator was later fed to a mixer to tune volume levels, then recorded via PC soundcard.

MFOS “Pink Enough For Me” noise generator

It is a very common circuit with a white noise source (transistor based) and an active lowpass filter. All resistors and capacitors are common and easy to get.

After I first prototyped this generator I thought I made an error in component placement or switched its values. There was almost no low end in the noise. I checked everything over 5 times, but after looking for other people’s experiences with this circuit – yes, that’s how it works. I wouldn’t call the generated noise pink :/ Hear by yourself! Noise source with passive filter

This filter design can be traced down to “The Audio Handbook” by National Semiconductors from ’70, and with some small modifications can be found in “Noise Generator Cookbook” by Thomas Henry. It is told to have very flat +/- 1 dB response. Sounds really pink and natural. You can almost feel waterdrops on your face.

I’ve added a common white noise source (with a lot if amplification) and an active output stage – the signal drop on the passive filter is great and there was the need to compensate it somehow. The hard-to-find 270 nF and 94 nF capacitors were replaced by parallel connection of more common ones.

Elliot Sound Products “Pink Noise Generator for Sound Testing” (with basic filter)

This is the simplest pink noise source you can find on Elliot Sound Products page (an amazing source for general audio circuits). The more complex one uses an advanced pink noise filter, and the super expanded one includes an IEC 60268-1 defined band limiting filter. I had problems with getting 5,6 nF capacitor, so I replaced it by 1 nF and 4,7 nF parallel connection (5,7 nF, but assuming 10% capacitors and 5% resistors it shouldn’t make any difference).

Noise generators comparison

You can see four spectrograms – outputs of four pink noise generators. From left:

  • MFOS “Pink enough for me”,
  • noise source with passive filter,
  • Elliot Sound Products “Pink Noise Generator for Sound Testing” (with basic filter),
  • reference – pink noise from Adobe Audition.

You can notice few things:

  • MFOS has problems in the linearity of filters cutoff (not enough lows and augmented mids) and is furthest from the reference noise,
  • version with passive filter has low/mid frequencies (up to around 4 kHz) very similar to reference pink noise and is not as bad as it seems,
  • ESP noise generator is very close to reference with a slight difference over 10 kHz (reference noise is a bit brighter).

I also made blind tests and some people said passive sounds a bit more natural (like ocean or waterfall), even if it is not perfect. ESP sounded too sharp to them and annoying, even if in theory more correct.

Conclusion

I would recommend listening to a sample and choose between ESP-designed or “passive” version. ESP version would be great for audio testing as it sounds more correct according to theory, but many will like “passive” for use in sound effects or noisemakers, as it sounds less harsh. Remember, the one from Elliot Sound Products can’t be used commercially without written authorization.

Введение в модульные синтезаторы: создаём первый патч в VCV Rack

Знакомимся с модулями и их функциональностью, тянем провода первого патча.

Модульные синтезаторы в последнее время всё больше и больше набирают популярность. Их особенность в полной свободе выбора: пользователи сами решают, какие функции и эффекты им нужны.

В основе их работы — использование контрольного напряжения (CV), позволяющего создавать безумные модуляции любых параметров, случайные секвенции и уникальные звуки.

Модули синтезаторов, применяющиеся в модуляторах, можно увидеть и в немодульных устройствах: речь об осцилляторах, генераторах шума, низкочастотных осцилляторах, ADSR-огибающих, фильтрах, усилителях, Sample And Hold. В отличие от немодульных устройств модульные синтезаторы позволяют изменять эти параметры более гибко и точно.

Давайте разберёмся в основных модулях на примере проекта VCV Rack — виртуального модульного окружения, в точности имитирующего работу реальных модульных систем.

Основные модули VCV Rack

Виртуальная модульная система синтеза звука VCV Rack насчитывает сотни различных модулей от разработчиков со всего мира. Тем не менее базовых модулей всего семь.

1. Осциллятор (VCO)

Осциллятор (от лат. Oscillo — качаюсь) – генератор звуковой волны, который может генерировать как простые формы волны (синус, треугольник, пила, прямоугольник), так и сложные через таблично-волновой синтез (wavetable vco).

2. Генератор шума (Noise Generator)

Шум — беспорядочные колебания, отличающиеся сложностью временной и спектральной структуры. Его можно использовать для придания аналогового звучания или для модуляции различных параметров.

3. Низкочастотный осциллятор (LFO)

LFO — это низкочастотный генератор, предназначенный для управления различными параметрами с помощью CV. Как правило, он не затрагивает область слышимых частот и работает в пределах 0,01-100 Гц. В качестве LFO можно использовать зацикленную ADSR огибающую или секвенсор (об этом я расскажу в одной из следующих статей).

4. ADSR-огибающая

Огибающая ADSR — это генератор огибающей функции, который используется для модуляции параметров. В частности, с помощью огибающей удобно настраивать динамику звука, подключив ADSR к усилителю.

ADSR отвечают за четыре параметра:

  1. Attack — начальная фаза, атака;
  2. Decay — фаза перехода к устоявшемуся состоянию;
  3. Sustain — установившееся состояние;
  4. Release — послезвучание.

С помощью ADSR звук может стать коротким и отрывистым, что пригодится для басовых партий, или, наоборот, — длинным, что подойдёт для пэдов.

Некоторые модули (например, Mutable Instruments) позволяют использовать от до шести стадии прохождения сигнала. Модуль ADSR управляется с помощью gate сигнала.

5. Sample and Hold (S&H)

Sample and Hold (устройство выборки и хранения) — модуль, который выдает случайное напряжение и удерживает его некоторое время. Предназначен для модуляции параметров.

6. Фильтр (VCF)

Фильтр (Voltage Controlled Filter) — модуль, предназначенный для изменения частотных характеристик сигнала.

Существует несколько типов фильтров:

  • LPF (low pass filter) — низкочастотный фильтр (срезает верхние частоты). Подробнее можно прочитать здесь;
  • HPF (high pass filter) — высокочастотный фильтр (срезает нижние частоты). Подробнее — в материале о высокочастотном фильтре;
  • BPF (bandpass)— полосовой фильтр (срезает все, кроме выбранной частоты.

7. Усилитель (VCA)

Усилитель (Voltage Controlled Amplifier) — усилитель, управляемый напряжением. Используется с модулем ADSR или LFO.

Создаём первый патч в VСV Rack

Теперь, когда вы знаете состав основных модулей, разберёмся с работой контрольного напряжения — CV (Control Voltage). CV — напряжение, с помощью которого происходит взаимодействие между модулями синтезатора.

При запуске модульной системы VCV Rack программа автоматически загружает стандартный патч. Дефолтный набор настроек можно удалить, выделив модули и убрав их с рабочей области.

Откройте менеджер доступных модулей и добавьте в рабочую зону модули:

  1. Fundamental VCO-1 — управляемый напряжением осциллятор, который будет генерировать основной звук. Подробнее о фундаментальных модулях можно прочитать в отдельном руководстве по этим устройствам.
  2. Audio8.Audio8 — модуль управления, через который VCV Rack «общается» со звуковой картой и другими программами.

Выберите аудиодрайвер для работы VCV Rack. Я пользуюсь стандартным драйвером DirectSound, однако вы можете переключиться на драйвер внешней звуковой карты. Для этого выберите в списке «Audio Devices» своей звуковую карту.

После выбора драйвера в интерфейсе синтезатора должна загореться лампочка «1-2». Индикатор сообщает, что для работы с VCV Rack доступны два моноканала.

Для вывода звука нужно подключить кабели. Наведите мышку на выход Fundamental VCO-1, зажмите выход и перетащите указатель ко входам 1-2. Произойдёт коммутация системы. Вуаля, всё запищит.

Чтобы управлять громкостью генерируемого сигнала, добавьте в систему модуль усилителя VCA-2.

Чтобы система стала более музыкальной, добавим секвенсор, активировав модуль SEQ-3. Соедините проводами модули так, как показано на рисунке ниже:

Попробуйте подключить ко входу V/Oct низкочастотный осциллятор или другой обычный осциллятор, чтобы услышать, как меняется звук в зависимости от используемых модулей.

Все любят бас, но та система, которую мы уже создали неспособна сгенерировать что-то низкое и мощное. Добавим модуль ADSR и подключим его ко входу EXP ранее добавленного усилителя. Вход EXP позволяет модулировать громкость.

ADSR требует гейтированный сигнал. На модуле SEQ-3 найдите соответствующий выход CV/Gate и потяните «спагеттину» ко входу Gate ADSR-модуля. Чтобы звук был отрывистым, установите минимальные значения для параметров Attack, Decay и Release.

Чтобы звук стал более уникальным и интересным, добавьте в окружение фильтр и низкочастотный осциллятор. Фильтр и LFO будут контролировать частоту среза сигнала, изменяя его характер. Поиграйте с регуляторами среза и резонанса на фильтре, измените частоты LFO, чтобы посмотреть, как изменится звук.
